CAMPUS BACKSTABS

She could not sleep afterwards, she kept thinking about everything that had taken place during the day. Like a reel of film, it all rolled in her eyes scene by scene, excruciatingly and painstakingly slow, and steady. She was not sure about it and she actually did not like it, at least not the emotional burden it was now turning out to be. What could she do about it, after all is said and done, it already did happen. There was no getting the toothpaste back into the tube.

He had stayed awake for only a few minutes afterwards thinking about nothing in particular, his mind lazily wandering around everything. At one point thinking about the light bulb, a silly grin gracing his face as he remembered an episode of the cartoon Ned's Newt where the newt made glass by heating sand. He quit when he realised he could not really connect the memory with the light bulb. A few cocky thoughts crossed his mind before he slipped into a deep slumber with the silly grin back in place.

She had thought it was the best thing at the moment, a way to get back to Ben for being so immature and a sponge. When Leon made the usual pass at her she played along, this time being a little too soft. In fact the strongest bit of defensive shield she put up against Leon was, "You will be killed by him, and I won't be there." Leon was not going to tell, and he was sure she wasn't going to either.

They had been hanging out in the way they thought best on a Friday afternoon having had no Lectures scheduled for the day. Some hard liquor, house music and FIFA 2014 taking center stage. Five blokes were having a great time, the three ladies were playing poker and juggling through all the social media sites occasionally posing for pictures and mostly talking gibberish the blokes could not comprehend and laughing their heads off. Diana was there as usual, wanting the lead role in everything and making it known to anybody who did not care to find out how tight and in love they were with Ben. As always was the case around his close friends, his insecurity was shelved and he was mostly passive in his responses to her.

The dry gin was getting to them all, Diana wanted Ben to quit the game and take her to the cafeteria to get some potato chips. That was not going to happen of course, Ben was in the FIFA zone beating the others, one opponent to go to establish a two round record in their winner-stays challenge. A little disagreement ensued as was expected, Diana was suddenly taking issue with the fact that all along Ben was playing with Jane sited on his laps and calling her his good luck charm. These sort of issues were not new to them and their friends knew the best way to handle it was to keep off.

Finally, Diana gave up on Ben and decided to go to the Cafeteria alone, Leon who was always the FIFA punching bag had just been humiliated by a 7-2 drabbing and needed to go for more liquor offered to accompany her. It was this little window of space together that lead to their conspiracy. They flirted harmlessly at first on their way to and fro with Leon making his usual passes at her.

They went for the drinks and potato chips and walked back together. It was already dark, a few minutes past nine o'clock. Outside the hostel gates Leon grabbed Diana and pulled her close to him holding her tightly, "Why not?" He asked. That's when her only defense for the night came, "You will be killed by him, and I won't be there." Leon liked the challenge, he bent forward giving her a slight lift from the back and laid a gentle kiss on her lips.

Back inside they acted as if nothing had happened. They drunk and Leon played a few more games and  in fact took a little joy at losing to Ben. Ben was by around 11 o'clock a little too drunk, singing and dancing to his every goal. What Leon found amusing was the fact that the higher Ben got the better he seemed to be at the game, the ripple effect was that the more negligent he also seemed to get towards Diana...and the more likely his chances of pulling off his coup. He grinned feeling like Sherlock Holmes at this analysis of what he preferred in his head as being co-relatives.

A few Whatsapp messages later, Diana got drunk and sleepy necessitating the need to go and crush at Esther's for their place was too far and Leon finally got a text inviting him over to the first year lady he had been in pursuit of since the previous week. Ben was enjoying the game better and in fact was suggesting a mini-league figuring that his main distraction was leaving, he staggered with them to the gate to see them off, he was all sweet now kissing Diana good night as Leon pretended to mind his business and make light of the moment, "You two love birds hurry up before my catch changes her mind."

They went straight to Leon's place where her anger against Ben, Leon's wild guts and the liquor were enough catalysts for the two to draw their knives and stab the now very drunk FIFA 2014 mini-league unbeaten champion in the back.
